Russian troops are far from Sumy. Russia captured several settlements directly on the border of the Sumy region, according to the Joint Forces Group.

As a result of months of Russian attempts to penetrate deeper into Ukrainian territory in the Sumy region, they have occupied several villages directly on the border, such as Hrabovske and Myropilske.

"Thus, the Russian border control zone extends up to 3–4 km deep, while the distance to the city of Sumy is over 35 kilometers," the statement reads.

The Ukrainian military urges that this information be taken into account when assessing the prospects of encircling the city from the east.

The Group also emphasizes that all Russian attempts to infiltrate Ukrainian territory are being thwarted and stopped in time.

"The Russians will not succeed, and they should keep their dreams of any encirclement and surrounding to themselves," the Ukrainian military adds.

Russia's advancement in Sumy region

Since January, reports have circulated that Russians are increasing their military presence in the Sumy region. Russians are increasing the size of their force every month.

Recently, Viktor Trehubov, a spokesperson for the Joint Forces Group, stated that Russian troops had intensified their offensive in the Sumy direction and are attempting to expand their areas of control near the border.

On April 19, the monitoring project DeepState reported that the occupiers had advanced near the settlements of Prokhody and Taratutyne in the Krasnopilske community of the Sumy district.

Already today, information is spreading online that Sumy could find itself in a semi-encirclement. In particular, TSN journalist Yulia Kyrienko wrote that active assaults had begun there and that this was the worst-case scenario.

In response, Tregubov stated that claims of an alleged threat of a semi-encirclement of Sumy are unfounded, neither on the ground nor according to map data.
