Claims about a threat of semi-encirclement of Sumy have nothing to do with reality, neither on the ground nor on the map, Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Joint Forces grouping, stated in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
Reports have begun circulating online suggesting that Sumy could face semi-encirclement. In particular, TSN journalist Yuliia Kyriienko claimed that active assaults had begun there and described it as “the worst situation.”
What the military command says
According to Trehubov, any claims about a threat of semi-encirclement of Sumy do not correspond to reality — neither on the ground nor on the map.
“Of course, there is a factor of Russian offensives, but as of now, in our area of responsibility, the Russians are so far from this city, have advanced so little into Ukrainian territory, and their presence near the border is so shallow that any talk of reaching Sumy from the east does not reflect reality,” he explained.
What is the current situation in the Sumy region
Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation Andrii Kovalenko also commented on the situation.
According to him, in the border areas of the Sumy region, the enemy is trying to infiltrate using early spring vegetation and is intensifying assault actions. However, there has been no breakthrough deep into the region so far.

“The fighting is difficult, but as of now, there is no enemy breakthrough deep into the region. Ukraine’s Defense Forces are doing everything possible to prevent the enemy from expanding its presence in the Sumy region, and the enemy is suffering significant losses,” Kovalenko said.
As previously reported, Russian activity on the front has decreased over the past two days, but Trehubov clarified that this is temporary — the enemy continues to apply pressure in the Sumy and Kharkiv directions.
Meanwhile, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War noted that Russia is attacking across three regions at once, but none of the assaults have achieved tactically significant results. According to the institute, such attacks may be reconnaissance efforts or attempts to disperse Ukrainian forces.
