Last year, Ukraine received 500,000 artillery shells purchased outside Europe as part of the Czech initiative, stated Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Barrons reports.

It was reported that a total of 18 countries, including Canada, Germany, and Portugal, raised about $1.8 billion by June 2024 to buy 155mm shells for Ukraine.

The first batch of munitions was sent in June 2024.

"The drive known as the Czech ammunition initiative ensured the supply of 500,000 artillery shells of the 155-millimeter caliber," Fiala said.

According to him, in 2024, Czechia acted as an intermediary in supplying about 1.5 million shells in total.

He added that Prague continues to send tens of thousands of artillery shells to Ukraine each month.

The supply of ammunition partially compensates for the failure of the EU’s promise to deliver one million shells to Ukraine by the end of March this year, which was disrupted due to limited production capacities.

Czech initiative

In 2024, Czechia was able to provide a significant amount of ammunition for Ukraine, in particular through purchases from countries outside the European Union. The implementation of this project was made possible thanks to the financial support of international partners.

In June, Ukraine received the first batch of shells.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala previously stated that by the end of 2024, Ukraine would receive about 500,000 more munitions under this initiative.
