Ukraine awaits decision on increased electricity imports from EU on September
The decision to increase the limit for electricity import from the EU is expected in the coming months, according to RBC-Ukraine article "Rolling blackouts: Will electricity imports from EU help Ukrainians?"
The European network of transmission system operators for electricity (ENTSO-e) could make such a decision as early as September.
"Sources familiar with the negotiation process tell the publication that there is a likelihood of a positive outcome regarding the increase in import limits in the coming months. The limit may exceed the expected volume," the article states.
What is known about the electricity import limit
Ukraine aims to increase the limit to at least 2.2 GW from the current import limit of 1.7 GW.
Currently, imports from Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Moldova are possible. The technical capabilities allow this without the need to build new interconnectors.
The political decision from the European Commission to increase import limits is already in place; now, a technical assessment from ENTSO-e is awaited.
Recall that in mid-May, the CEO of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, stated in an interview with RBC-Ukraine that electricity imports from EU countries to Ukraine have increased and practically reached their physical maximum.
