Ukraine expects a decision from the United States on the supply of Patriot air defense systems, according to the evening address of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

As Zelenskyy reported, today he reviewed a briefing from Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Denys Shmyhal.

"On Friday, I expect all the details, key calculations, and a report on the decisions. Specifically, regarding the PURL program, which allows us to purchase American weapons," the president said.

According to him, more than $2 billion is already in the program, with another $1.5 billion announced. Ukraine is awaiting these funds and, accordingly, the delivery of weapons.

"And much depends on our partners — there is good momentum with Europe, and we are expecting decisions from the US. In particular, regarding the Patriot systems — that is very important. We have proposed to America to purchase the necessary number of systems. Our proposal regarding drones is also on the table," Zelenskyy added.

Air defense systems for Ukraine

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the transfer of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, funded by US allies. This is part of the PURL program.

Germany, on August 1, announced it would provide Ukraine with two Patriot systems. Initially, this involves delivering the launchers in the first phase. In the second phase, Berlin will provide the remaining components of the systems over the next 2–3 months.

Recently, it became known that Germany has begun delivering two new Patriot systems to Ukraine.

Norway has allocated around $700 million for Patriot systems for Ukraine.

In addition, it was recently announced that France and Germany will provide Ukraine with more air defense systems.

Ukraine is also set to receive an additional air defense system from the Nordic and Baltic countries ahead of winter.

According to Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine urgently needs an additional 10 Patriot missile systems, as well as missiles for them and other air defense systems, as Russia plans further strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
