Ukraine and UK sign defense deal worth over $2.5 billion
Ukraine and the United Kingdom have signed an agreement to enhance defense capabilities, which includes the supply, repair, and production of weapons, according to the President's Office.
The agreement on official credit support for the development of Ukraine's defense capabilities was signed by Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and UK Defense Secretary John Healey in the presence of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The document will enable the initiation of Ukrainian-British projects in the defense sector. It specifically mentions the supply, repair, and partial production of air defense systems, armored vehicles, and ammunition.
The agreement stipulates that British suppliers can enter into credit agreements and contracts with Ukraine for £2 billion (over $2.5 billion). This amount may be increased in the future. The loan repayment period is 15 years.
According to the President's Office, the agreement will help equip the Ukrainian Defense Forces with air defense systems and radar and strike systems by 2026, acquire technology, and establish partial production of barrels, spare parts, and components for artillery systems and Western-style armored vehicles.
"This agreement will reduce the burden on the state budget and allow us to obtain the necessary weapons for the defense of our state in the short term, primarily in the field of air defense," Rustem Umerov said.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the use of funds will be monitored by a joint commission comprising representatives from both governments.
