Trump backs ‘territory swap’ idea with Russia, some territory will go back to Ukraine

US President Donald Trump stated that a possible peace plan envisions Ukraine regaining part of its territories and a mutual land swap with Russia. According to him, this is a complex process that should benefit both sides, according to his remarks made while speaking to journalists at the White House.
During an interview, commenting on possible scenarios for resolving the war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump said that the US is considering an agreement option that would involve mutual territorial concessions.
This would mean that Ukraine could transfer certain territories under Russia’s control, while in return, Moscow would have to hand back to Kyiv some areas currently under its occupation.
Trump noted that such an approach, in his opinion, could bring the end of hostilities closer.
At the same time, Trump emphasized that the final decisions depend on negotiations between the parties and the political will of both Kyiv and Moscow.
“You’re looking at territory that has been fought over for three and a half years with, you know, a lot of Russians have died, a lot of Ukrainians have died. So, we're looking at that, but we're actually looking to get some back, and some swapping; it's complicated. It's actually nothing easy. It's very complicated, but we're going to get some back. There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both,” Donald Trump stated.
Trump’s remarks have already sparked a wave of discussions in the US, Europe, and Ukraine, as the issue of territorial concessions is one of the most sensitive in the context of the Ukrainian-Russian war.
Ending the war through Donald Trump’s mediation
Last month, Trump sharply criticized Putin for the massive shelling of Ukraine and gave him 50 days to reach a peace with Kyiv. However, Trump later shortened the deadline, naming August 8 as the cut-off date.
On August 6, US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow. Trump described their meeting as successful.
Now, US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Thus, on August 7, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stated that a meeting between Putin and Trump could indeed take place in the coming days. He also claimed that a location for the meeting had allegedly already been determined.
