Ukraine and NATO to hold emergency meeting over Russia's strike with new missile, AFP
Ukraine has called for an emergency meeting with NATO next week to discuss Russia's use of a new ballistic missile, AFP reports.
According to diplomatic sources, the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting will be held at the ambassadorial level on Tuesday, November 26.
Sources told AFP that Ukraine convened the meeting after Russia's strike with the new ballistic missile on the city of Dnipro.
Russia's strike with new missile
On Thursday, November 21, Russia launched a new ballistic missile at Ukraine for the first time. The Ukrainian Air Force initially reported it as an intercontinental ballistic missile. The launch took place from the Astrakhan region, likely from the Kapustin Yar missile testing range.
Online speculation suggested that there was the Rubezh missile, usually launched from a ground-based system.
However, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on the evening of November 21 that the Russian military had struck the Dnipropetrovsk region with the medium-range Oreshnik ballistic missile. Analysts at Defense Express suggest that the Oreshnik missile may in fact be the Rubezh missile, with Russia attempting to intimidate the West with different names.
Furthermore, the Pentagon confirmed that Russia had warned the United States shortly before launching the new missile.
