The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, and his Canadian counterpart, Mélanie Joly, signed an agreement between Ukraine and Canada on the mutual protection of classified information, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

As explained by the MFA, the signing of the agreement will be an important step in ensuring a reliable and structured exchange of information between the parties as part of their joint efforts to strengthen defense capabilities and ensure security.

This initiative is a concrete implementation of the key provisions of the security agreement signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on February 24, 2024.

"Today's signing of a new international treaty between Ukraine and Canada demonstrates the high level of mutual respect and trust between the two countries that share relations of special partnership," the Ministry states.

Canada’s support for Ukraine

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine, Canada has provided substantial military, humanitarian, and financial assistance. The government allocated hundreds of millions of dollars for weapon supplies, military equipment, ammunition, and the training of Ukrainian soldiers under the UNIFIER program. Canada has also supplied Ukraine with artillery, armored vehicles, and air defense systems.

Additionally, Canada actively supports Ukraine diplomatically by imposing sanctions on Russia, providing humanitarian aid for refugees, and funding the restoration of critical infrastructure.

In September, it was reported that Canada planned to deliver a modern NASAMS medium-range air defense system to Ukraine. By mid-November, it was confirmed that the air defense system had already arrived in the country.
