The United Kingdom has conducted its first successful tests of high-energy laser weaponry mounted on armored vehicles, the UK Ministry of Defense reports.

The cutting-edge system was tested at a range in Wales, where soldiers from the 16th Royal Artillery successfully destroyed drones using a powerful infra-red laser.

The UK Ministry of Defense explained that the laser weapon is integrated into the Wolfhound armored vehicle and has tracking systems that provide real-time targeting precision.

This technology is described as a cost-effective alternative to traditional munitions, with an unlimited supply of "ammunition" in the form of energy.

Warrant Officer Matthew Anderson, the trials manager, stated that the new system is undoubtedly an important addition to the British Army's arsenal.

The project was realized in collaboration with an industrial consortium led by Raytheon UK. The development is part of the government's plan to strengthen national security, ensuring the UK's readiness for future challenges.

Furthermore, Minister for Defense Procurement and Industry Maria Eagle emphasized that this technology underscores the UK's commitment to maintaining leadership in military innovation.

"The successful testing of this laser weapon system represents a significant step forward in our development of possible future defense capabilities and showcases British engineering excellence," the Minister stated.

Earlier this year, the UK Ministry of Defense mentioned the possibility of sending Ukraine a prototype laser weapon.

At the same time, South Korea announced that it is also modernizing its drone countermeasures systems by adopting laser weaponry. Read more details in our material.
