UK endorses Trump’s proposal for Ukraine, impact on negotiations explained

The UK supports US President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine and make security guarantees for European allies very reliable, states UK Defence Secretary John Healey.
According to him, the UK welcomes Trump’s desire to end this terrible war and actively work on security guarantees for Ukraine’s allies.
Healey noted that negotiations are ongoing on how Ukraine’s allies can ensure a future peace agreement. He added that contributions from partners are currently awaiting confirmation.
According to the minister, the format of a possible volunteer coalition will depend on the terms of the agreement, and details are deliberately not being disclosed so as not to make the Russians wiser and not to strengthen Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position in future negotiations.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
On August 18, a meeting was held at the White House between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders, during which the parties discussed security guarantees for Ukraine.
Following the talks, Zelenskyy said that the details of the guarantees were planned to be agreed upon within 10 days, but this deadline was later extended by another week.
On August 25, Trump publicly confirmed that Europe is ready to provide Ukraine with substantial guarantees, and the US will support them.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed to European leaders a plan for providing security guarantees to Ukraine in the format of collective assistance, which does not involve NATO membership.
Meanwhile, the European Union defined how it will participate in Ukraine’s security guarantees, including training and civilian missions, as well as the role of neutral countries.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Ukraine’s partner countries have developed a clear roadmap regarding the provision of security guarantees.
Zelenskyy also outlined three key blocks of security guarantees for Ukraine: maintaining the army, cooperation with NATO countries, and sanctions against Russia.
