EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, will meet in London with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Defence Secretary John Healey to discuss coordination of efforts to support Ukraine. The agenda will also include strengthening pressure on Russia, according to the UK government.

Downing Street has stated that the visit of the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to London for talks with British officials comes amid increased joint efforts to curb Russia's economy.

"UK-EU foreign policy consultations will focus on united support for Ukraine, countering Russian hybrid threats and working to step up collective defence spending," the UK government said in a statement.

It is also noted that, as part of the UK’s commitment to strengthening ties with Europe and working together to secure the region’s future, Kallas will arrive in London today, March 18, for discussions with the heads of the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign Office on ways to increase pressure on Russia and establish a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The talks will coordinate cooperation on Ukraine and will also address efforts to intensify economic pressure on the aggressor state, ensuring that Russia pays for the damage caused to Ukraine through the war.

Additionally, the discussions will cover measures to strengthen actions against hybrid threats, such as cyberattacks, election interference, and unchecked Russian disinformation.

The parties will review efforts to increase European defense spending, particularly through innovative initiatives, and strengthen broader military readiness in support of NATO.

As UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized, ensuring the strength and security of the country is impossible without strengthening our shared European security and uniting with our partners to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Downing Street also confirmed that Kallas will meet with the Chief of the Defence Staff for a briefing with the commander of INTERFLEX and EU liaison officers for the Military Assistance Mission to support Ukraine.

"Discussions will focus on around how to build on the success of Operation INTERFLEX by enhancing the training offered to Ukraine," the British government said.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey noted that European security starts in Ukraine.

"The UK and EU are united in our resolve to back Ukraine with the military firepower they need to stand up to Russia’s illegal invasion and secure a lasting peace," he stated.

European sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine

Official London reminded that the UK and the European Union, along with other international partners, have jointly imposed sanctions on Russia, stripping its economy of $450 billion since February 2022.

Yesterday, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the G7 countries are preparing further steps to pressure Russia, which could be implemented if Russian President Vladimir Putin refuses to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The UK and other Western nations have also worked together on training Ukrainian military personnel under the UK’s INTERFLEX operation and the EU Military Advisory Mission in Ukraine, which have jointly trained over 120,000 Ukrainian soldiers.

Additionally, yesterday, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stated that the EU's new €40 billion aid package to Ukraine has broad political support, but there are still many details to work out. She also noted that Hungary's position has been taken into account.
