According to Trump, during the conversation, he warned Netanyahu that if Israeli strikes escalate into a full-scale war, he could end up alone against the Iranians.
Israel’s response to the strike
He also said that during the conversation with Netanyahu, he asked him not to respond to Iran’s missile strike. According to him, the call ended without a clear conclusion, and the Israeli prime minister did not say what decision he had made. At the same time, people who heard the conversation said that "Trump managed to buy Netanyahu a few more days."
Later, Netanyahu held consultations with the heads of the defense establishment and then informed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of his decision to strike Iran.
Trump emphasized that the Israelis had provided updated information at a very late stage, when they were already on their way toward Iran, and added that he had managed to reduce the scale of the attack.
Deal on Iran
He also stated that five countries in the region involved in mediation efforts between the US and Iran had asked him to pressure Netanyahu to stop the strikes and move forward with reaching a deal.
Trump said that earlier that morning, the Iranians had stated they would no longer carry out attacks on Israel, adding that they had asked the US to tell Israel to stop the strikes, and that he had then called the Israeli Prime Minister and made him stop.
The US president stressed that he still considers himself open to a deal and believes Iran is interested in reaching one.
What preceded this
On June 7, Iran carried out at least three waves of ballistic missile launches against Israel for the first time since April. Israeli air defense systems intercepted around ten missiles, and there were no reports of fatalities from direct hits.
After the attack, Trump held a phone call with Netanyahu and urged him to refrain from an immediate response. According to Trump, negotiations with Iran were allegedly in their final stage.
However, Israel did not support this position. By the morning of June 8, the Israeli army had already struck missile launchers and military infrastructure in central and western Iran.
On Monday, June 8, Iran announced a halt to military operations against Israel. At the same time, Tehran warned of harsher and more destructive actions if Israel continued operations in southern Lebanon or launched new strikes.
