US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO. He is expected to discuss the issue with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a briefing.
A journalist asked Leavitt whether the US is still considering the option of leaving NATO.
"It's something the president has discussed, and I think it's something the president will be discussing in a couple of hours with Secretary General Rutte. And perhaps you'll hear directly from the president following that meeting later this afternoon," Leavitt said.
Trump’s threats
US President Donald Trump sharply criticized NATO after allies refused his request to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to help reopen it.
The American leader repeatedly described the alliance as a "paper tiger" and accused allies of cowardice.
According to Trump, Russian leader Vladimir Putin would not fear NATO if the US exits the alliance.
He also warned that he is ready to consider a US withdrawal, arguing that the United States can handle all threats on its own.
In response to these threats, French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump’s remarks call into question US commitments.
