Trump to discuss North Korean troop involvement in Russia-Ukraine war with South Korea's President
The newly elected 47th president of the US, Donald Trump, held a phone call with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The two leaders discussed, among other issues, the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia to assist in the war against Ukraine, states Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo.
During the conversation, Yoon congratulated Trump on his convincing victory in the presidential election. They discussed the countries' relations in the fields of security, economy, and global issues.
According to a representative of the South Korean president, Trump emphasized that the US is eager to collaborate with South Korea in the shipbuilding industry, particularly in maritime construction, exports, repairs, and maintenance.
The South Korean official also stated that Yoon and Trump discussed the situation in North Korea, including recent nuclear developments, missile launches, and the deployment of troops in Russia. Furthermore, the two leaders expressed concern about these security issues and the urgency of the situation in Ukraine.
The South Korean President's office noted that they also agreed to hold an in-person meeting soon.
"They agreed that an in-person meeting would be essential to discuss these matters further and will coordinate soon on a date and location," said Yoon's Principal Deputy National Security Adviser.
What preceded this
Yesterday, a representative of the South Korean president told Western media that Seoul aims to build an ideal security partnership with the new US administration. They also mentioned President Yoon's intention to meet with Trump, who won the presidential election, in the coming days.
At that time, the South Korean president's office stated that Seoul planned to send a group of observers to Ukraine due to North Korea's deployment of troops to Russia to assist in the war.
Additionally, recently, Ukraine's Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, revealed that Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers had already engaged in a confrontation with North Korean troops in the Kursk region of Russia.
It was also reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared details of a phone call with Trump last night, where they agreed to maintain dialogue and further develop cooperation between their countries.
Before this, on November 6, Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his victory in the US election and emphasized that he values the Republican's commitment to peace through a strength approach, which can truly bring a just peace to Ukraine.
