US President Donald Trump confirmed that the war between Russia and Ukraine must end as soon as possible and shared plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin once the relevant negotiations are established, reports CNN.

After his inauguration on January 20, Trump spoke in the Oval Office with journalists about his intentions to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

"We’re going to try and get it done as quickly as possible. You know, the war with Ukraine and Russia should have never started," said the new US president.

Recalling his statements as a presidential candidate about being able to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, Trump noted that he still has half a day to achieve his goal.

Trump also shared that he plans to meet with Kremlin leader Putin after the negotiations between their teams are established, adding that the process is already underway.

It should be noted that before being appointed as the new Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, whose nomination was already approved by the US Senate in a vote, stated that he could not set a timeline for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, the US official mentioned that both sides would have to make "concessions to achieve peace.
