US President Donald Trump believes that Russia currently has the upper hand in negotiations to end the war, according to Politico.
Trump was asked about which country is currently in a more advantageous position in the negotiations.
"Well, there can be no question about it. It’s Russia. It’s a much bigger country," says the US President.
Trump believes that the war, in his opinion, should not have happened at all if he had been president at the time, and it did not happen for four years.
"Uh, I watched that taking place, and I said, wow, they’re gonna cause some problems here. And it started and it, uh, could’ve evolved into, uh, World War III, frankly," Trump continues.
At the same time, he notes that such a scenario is unlikely at the moment.
US peace plan
In November, the US presented a new 28-point peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. The full text of the plan was not made public, so information about its content and changes was limited to statements by officials and diplomatic leaks.
At the same time, the initial version of the document was clearly beneficial to Russia. In this regard, the Ukrainian and US delegations held consultations for about two weeks to finalize the document and make it more beneficial for Kyiv.
Recently, Ukrainian representatives held another round of talks with the American side on the peace plan after Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, discussed the peace proposals with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The New York Times has learned that one of the packages in the updated plan concerns restrictions on the Ukrainian army and missile range, while the other three concern territorial concessions, economic cooperation between the US and Russia after the war, and broader European security issues.
At the same time, according to Bloomberg, European leaders are trying to convince Zelenskyy not to agree to a possible deal on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donbas without reliable security guarantees from the United States.
