US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations with Iran took place last night. According to him, a deal could be reached within five days, according to Bloomberg and ABC News.

The US President emphasizes that the latest negotiations with Iran took place last night. He added that Tehran really wants to make a deal and that this could happen within five days or sooner.

He says he is not sure what the Iranian media is talking about.

In response to a question about who the US administration was negotiating with, Trump stated that Iran has representatives.

ABC News notes that on Friday, March 20, the American leader said that the US was having a hard time finding people to negotiate with.

"We have nobody to talk to. And you know what? We like it that way," he says.

Background

Today, March 23, after talks with Iran, Trump ordered a delay in strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure. He stated that over the past two days, Washington and Tehran had held very productive and constructive talks regarding the resolution of the conflict in the Middle East.

Trump noted that he had ordered a five-day delay in strikes on Iran’s energy sector, provided that further negotiations are successful.

Iran's reaction

Following Trump’s statement, Iranian media reported that no negotiations had taken place between Tehran and Washington.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry asserts that there is no dialogue and that the US President is simply trying to buy time while regional de-escalation efforts are underway.

Trump's ultimatum

Yesterday, Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran, demanding that it open the Strait of Hormuz within two days. According to him, if Tehran fails to do so within 48 hours, its power plants will be destroyed.

Tehran responded that if its fuel and energy sector were to be targeted, it would strike back at US energy, information technology, and desalination infrastructure in the region.
