Trump's health: What is chronic venous insufficiency and why it matters

US President Donald Trump underwent a medical examination due to "mild swelling" in his legs and bruises on one of his arms. He was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency. Marca explains what this condition is and how dangerous it can be.
What is chronic venous insufficiency?
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which the veins in the legs are unable to pump blood back to the heart effectively. This occurs because the valves inside the veins, which usually prevent blood from flowing backward, weaken or become damaged. As a result, blood stagnates in the lower extremities, leading to persistent symptoms.
Common symptoms include:
- Swelling in the legs and ankles
- Pain or a feeling of heaviness
- Skin changes (discoloration, dryness, ulcers)
- Prominent varicose veins
- Night cramps or constant itching
How serious is Trump's condition?
Although the diagnosis may sound alarming, chronic venous insufficiency is not directly life-threatening if treated properly. However, if left untreated, it can lead to complications such as venous ulcers or thrombosis.
Sources close to Trump's medical team have stated that the condition was discovered during a routine check-up and that the former president has already started treatment, which includes compression therapy, lifestyle changes, and possibly outpatient procedures to improve blood flow.
Who is at risk?
CVI is more common in people over 50 years old, particularly those with a family history, obesity, multiple pregnancies, or jobs that require prolonged standing or sitting. At 79 years old, Donald Trump falls into the high-risk category.
According to the Society for Vascular Surgery, up to 40% of the adult population in the US may have some degree of chronic venous insufficiency.
What treatment options are available?
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition, but usually includes:
- Compression stockings (with graduated compression)
- Leg elevation
- Regular physical activity
- Medical procedures such as sclerotherapy, laser ablation, or surgery are used in more severe cases.
With proper treatment, many people lead normal, active lives. This seems to be the goal for Trump, taking into account his long political career.
Although Donald Trump's diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency raised concerns among his supporters, medical experts agree that it is a manageable condition with proper treatment.
