US President Donald Trump said that some of the people invited to the proposed Board of Peace are controversial figures, but described them as having tremendous influence and capable of getting the job done. He made the remarks while discussing the idea of inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the Board, according to his remarks to journalists in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.
"We want everybody," the White House chief said when asked why Putin should be invited to the Board of Peace.
"I have some controversial people on, but these are people that get the job done. These are people that have tremendous influence. All babies on the board, it wouldn’t be very much," Trump added.
The US President also stressed that the Board would "get a lot of work done that the UN should have done." At the same time, he said cooperation with the UN would continue, but the Board of Peace will be "special."
Trump establishes a Board of Peace
In recent days, the US President has invited several world leaders to join the Board of Peace he is establishing to help resolve global military conflicts. Initially, the Board was expected to focus only on the war in Gaza, but those plans have since changed.
Among those invited was Russian leader Vladimir Putin, a move later confirmed by the Kremlin. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the invitation was delivered through diplomatic channels and that Russia plans to seek clarification on the initiative's details.
Most European Union countries have declined Trump's invitation to join the Board of Peace. Among those rejecting participation is Denmark, whose relations with Washington remain tense amid disputes over Greenland.
