The administration of US President Donald Trump is reportedly discussing the creation of a Peace Council modeled after the Gaza Strip initiative, which could monitor the implementation of a future ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, according to the Financial Times.
As noted, the original Peace Council is part of Trump’s Gaza peace plan. The body, to be headed by Trump himself, is designed to coordinate governance of the Palestinian enclave in the future.
According to a senior Ukrainian official involved in talks with the US, the establishment of a Peace Council for Ukraine - also to be led by the US president - is an important part of proposals aimed at ending the Russian war.
A source told the publication that the council would include representatives from Ukraine, Europe, NATO, and Russia, tasked with ensuring the implementation of a future peace plan and monitoring compliance.
It is also known that the US is considering a similar Peace Council for Venezuela. Proposals for these councils are expected to be presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week.
Current stage of peace talks in Ukraine
The US and Ukraine continue their dialogue on a peace agreement with Russia. A new round of talks is set to begin today in Miami. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the peace plan is currently 90% complete, while security guarantees for Ukraine are fully ready.
However, the parties have not yet reached an agreement on a key issue: territorial concessions to the aggressor. Washington insists on ceding the Donbas region to Moscow, but Ukraine is firmly opposed.
Russia also remains firm on its claims to Ukrainian territories and has no plans to make concessions. During talks in Moscow with the US delegation in early December, the sides failed to reach a compromise, according to the Kremlin, though the discussions were described as constructive.
Recently, Kremlin special envoy Kirill Dmitriev was reportedly seen in Paris, allegedly visiting the US embassy. This followed a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in the French capital, which is also engaged in Ukrainian affairs.
