US President Donald Trump has invited Belarus’ self-proclaimed leader, Alexander Lukashenko, to join the Peace Board on Gaza, according to Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ruslan Varankov.
According to the spokesperson, Lukashenko reacted “positively” to the proposal.
“We also view this proposal as recognition of the personal merits and international authority of the head of the Belarusian state. The proposal was conveyed to the President of the Republic of Belarus and was received positively,” Varankov said.
He stated that Belarus is ready to take part in the work of the Peace Board. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson added that the country would be able to participate in global efforts to resolve international conflicts.
Varankov noted that this would ultimately contribute to building a “new security architecture, which Belarus has been actively promoting in recent years.”
Trump’s Peace Board
On Thursday, January 15, Trump announced the creation of the Board of Peace that would oversee postwar governance in the Gaza Strip.
At the same time, Bloomberg reported that since Hamas still controls nearly half of the Gaza Strip and refuses to disarm, the prospects for lasting peace remain uncertain.
In addition, the group has not returned the remains of the last hostage, which is considered the most critical part of the first phase of Trump’s proposal.
Bloomberg also reported that members of the Peace Board would serve terms of up to 3 years, with the option of renewal. This limitation would not apply to countries that contribute more than $1 billion in cash during the first year.
On Saturday, January 17, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Argentine President Javier Milei were added to the list of world leaders invited by Trump to join the Gaza Peace Board.
On January 18, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Donald Trump had invited Hungary to take part in the work of the new Board of Peace.
