The White House does not rule out a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The main condition is that it must produce a tangible positive outcome, according to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

She emphasized that Donald Trump wants actions from the Russian leader, not just talks.

"The president is extremely motivated by the success of his peace deal in the Middle East. And he wants this war (in Ukraine - ed.) to come to an end. He's been saying it now for nine months of being in office," Leavitt said.

Trump-Putin meeting

Last week, Trump announced a possible meeting with the Russian President in Hungary to try to end the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the aggressor state had rejected a ceasefire. He said he discussed the current situation and potential steps for arranging a Putin-Trump meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Following this, on Wednesday, October 22, US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies.

The US Treasury noted that the new anti-Russian sanctions were introduced to compel Putin to engage in serious negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

In addition, the US president canceled the expected meeting with Putin. Trump said he decided not to hold talks with the dictator because he was confident he would not achieve the desired outcome.

Russian former president Dmitry Medvedev has already called the US sanctions and the cancellation of the summit with Putin an "act of war" against Russia.

The Russian President stated that the meeting with Donald Trump in Budapest would not take place, allegedly due to a lack of preparation.
