It is reported that Trump’s possible withdrawal from the diplomatic process increases the risks of disrupting the peace dialogue and creates additional pressure on Kyiv.
Negotiations under pressure from US domestic politics
US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of withdrawing from negotiations on settling the war between Ukraine and Russia.
According to the publication, the decision could be made in the coming weeks, when Trump’s attention shifts to the congressional election campaign.
The Ukrainian side is already feeling a shrinking window of time for diplomatic initiatives. At the same time, according to the source, Trump may consider the negotiations politically disadvantageous and shift responsibility for their breakdown onto both sides of the conflict.
Ukraine’s position
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Kyiv has demonstrated readiness to compromise.
“Ukrainians have tried hard to demonstrate their willingness to compromise. The tactic we chose is for the Americans not to think that we want to continue the war,” he said.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine supports any US initiatives that could accelerate the settlement process while maintaining control over its own position and national interests.
Political risks and consequences
Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the negotiations could significantly complicate international efforts to end the war and increase uncertainty on the diplomatic stage.
As the US elections approach, the diplomatic process risks becoming a tool of domestic politics, raising the likelihood of delays or the collapse of agreements.
US First Lady Melania Trump, on February 12, facilitated the return to Ukraine of a group of children who had been taken to Russia after the start of the full-scale invasion, ensuring their safe journey home.
President Donald Trump has, for the first time, involved top military commanders in key negotiations with Iran and Russia, emphasizing a new diplomatic approach in which the military directly participates in shaping foreign policy decisions.
