US President Donald Trump has taken an unusual step by involving active military officials in high-level negotiations.

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), participated for the first time in indirect talks with Iran in Oman, appearing in full dress uniform as a symbol of increased US presence in the region.

At the same time, US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll continues to play a key role in negotiations over the Russia-Ukraine war, maintaining contact with Ukrainian officials between sessions.

New role of military emissaries

Experts say Trump’s decision to use military leaders instead of traditional diplomats reflects the administration’s push for a tougher and more responsive foreign policy.

"Presidents use trusted officials to convey important messages," notes Eliot Cohen, former State Department advisor.

Driscoll acts as a liaison between Ukraine and US officials, including Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, ensuring continuity of dialogue.

Contact with Russia and NATO

In Abu Dhabi, General Alexus Grinkevich, commander of US and NATO forces in Europe, joined the talks.

According to US military sources, his participation is aimed at restoring high-level military contact with Russia, maintaining a constant dialogue to explore paths toward lasting peace.

This approach signals a shift from traditional diplomacy and highlights the growing role of the military in resolving international conflicts.

Trump has proposed replacing the current Treaty on the Reduction of Offensive Arms (New START) with a new agreement between Russia and the United States.

US officials also stated that Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement on a prisoner exchange, as well as on restoring direct military dialogue between the US and Russia to explore ways to end the conflict.
