Trump talks about negotiations in Beijing
Donald Trump told reporters that the war in Ukraine was discussed during his talks with Xi Jinping in Beijing. The conversation focused on a possible settlement of the conflict and further steps toward ending it.
What the US president said
During a conversation with the press, Donald Trump confirmed that he discussed the situation in Ukraine with the Chinese leader.
"I did. We discussed (it)... Well, it's one (conflict) that we'd like to see settled," he told reporters.
According to the US president, both Washington and Beijing are interested in ending the war and finding ways to resolve the situation.
US Senator Lindsey Graham stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping has influence over global conflicts due to China’s economic ties with Russia. He said the Chinese leader could help push for an end to the wars in Ukraine and around Iran, as Beijing remains the largest buyer of Russian energy resources, including oil and gas.
It is also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning to visit Beijing next week, on May 20. The trip will take place just days after a meeting between Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, adding additional political context to the upcoming visit.
