US President Donald Trump stated that there is a "very good chance" of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest.
Today, November 7, the US leader is hosting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Washington. When asked by a journalist whether there is a chance for a meeting with Putin in Budapest, Trump responded affirmatively.
"There's always a chance, a very good chance," the US President emphasized.
Trump-Putin meeting
In October, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation and announced their intention to hold an in-person meeting within two weeks in Hungary’s capital.
Preparations for the talks were to be coordinated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, but the American leader soon canceled the meeting.
This happened due to Russia’s unwillingness to adjust its maximalist demands regarding the terms for ending the war in Ukraine. Trump publicly stated that he "would not waste his time."
After that, on the night of October 23, Trump imposed sanctions on two Russian oil giants — Rosneft and Lukoil. The US Treasury called on Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire.
Trump stated that he is ready for a new meeting with Putin, but only if a real agreement to end the war in Ukraine is reached. The Kremlin confirmed that the Russian leader is reportedly not opposed to negotiations, but no specific date for the summit has been set.
RBC-Ukraine reported that Ukraine is willing to support a Trump-Putin summit in Budapest, but only if it leads to a ceasefire and the end of the war.
