Ukraine will support a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary, but on one condition, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a briefing.
The Ukrainian leader stated that he can only imagine the Ukraine-related issues that Trump will discuss with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
According to Zelenskyy, Orbán wants to bring Trump back to Hungary for a meeting with the Russian President.
"You know our position. If there is a meeting that can definitely lead to a ceasefire and the end of the war, Ukraine will support such formats," the president said.
He added that if such meetings are held only for the Hungarian prime minister’s electorate and do not produce any results, Ukraine will not support them.
"Of course, fruitless meetings about us and without us are fruitless for that very reason," Zelenskyy emphasized.
Meeting between Trump and Orbán and the disrupted summit in Budapest
Today, November 7, a meeting between Trump and Orbán is scheduled to take place. Ahead of his trip to Washington, the Hungarian prime minister said that one of the topics of their talks would be the war in Ukraine.
In addition, Orbán previously stated that a meeting between the leaders of the US and Russia within the framework of the Budapest peace summit on Ukraine could take place on any day. According to him, several issues need to be resolved for this to happen.
In October, Donald Trump held another phone conversation with the Russian President. After that, the US president announced a summit of leaders that was supposed to take place in the Hungarian capital.
However, the meeting was derailed because Russia kept its position unchanged regarding its demands for ending the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Trump did not rule out meeting with Putin a bit later.
