Trump makes statement after phone call with Zelenskyy
US presidential candidate Donald Trump said he had a “very good phone call” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, reports CNN.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said that Zelensky congratulated him on the very successful Republican National Convention and "becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States."
Trump said that Zelenskyy condemned the “heinous assassination attempt” last Saturday, noting that the American people are united in a spirit of unity in these times.
“I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families,” Trump wrote.
He added that both sides would be able to come together and agree on "a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity."
After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Trump has repeatedly stated that he could end the war in one day. But it remains unclear how he will achieve peace.
In his conversation with Trump, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of bipartisan and bicameral support for Ukraine from the United States. This was their first phone conversation since 2021.
According to the press secretary of the President of Ukraine, Serhii Nykyforov, Trump and Zelenskyy agreed to meet. However, the date, time, and format of the meeting are still unknown.
