During his conversation with Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed, among other things, Washington's support for Kyiv. The parties also agreed to meet in person, according to Zelenskyy on X.

The president noted that their dialogue took place “to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.”

“I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future,” Zelenskyy wrote.

He also stressed “the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support" for protecting Ukraine's freedom and independence.

“Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day,” Zelenskyy said in the post.

The president also informed about the agreement with Trump to discuss in person what steps can make the peace fair and truly lasting.

What Trump said about his conversation with Zelenskyy

Donald Trump said on his social network Truth Social that the conversation with Zelenskyy was “very good.”

He expressed his gratitude to the head of the Ukrainian state “for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families.”

“Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity,” the US presidential candidate wrote.

Backstory

CNN reported that former US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were scheduled for a phone call on July 19.

Later that night, RBC-Ukraine's sources in the President's Office said that Zelensky had spoken with Donald Trump. The details of the conversation were not disclosed at the time.

Trump has repeatedly stated that if he is elected president of the United States, he could allegedly stop Russia's war against Ukraine. On July 19, the former US president said that he could stop any war with a phone call and “within 24 hours.”

The Ukrainian president reacted to this statement. In an interview with the BBC, Zelenskyy emphasized that simply stopping the war would mean Ukraine's loss of territory and the victory of Russian leader Putin, and Kyiv would never do that.
