Trump issues ultimatum to China, threatens 50% tariffs

The United States may impose an additional 50% tariff on imports from China if Beijing does not lift its 34% tariff on American goods, stated US President Donald Trump.
Trump wrote that on April 6, China introduced a 34% tariff on US products, ignoring his earlier warning that any country that retaliates will immediately face new and significantly higher tariffs.
"If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9," he added.
He also stated that all talks with China, including those related to Beijing’s requests for meetings with US officials, would be suspended.
US-China trade war
Recently, the US introduced tariffs on imports from several countries, including a 34% tariff on Chinese goods.
In response, China announced a 34% tariff on US imports starting April 10. Beijing called the US President’s decision a typical act of unilateral intimidation.
Amid the escalating trade war, oil prices have sharply dropped. Brent crude is now trading at $64 per barrel.
