The United States has issued an ultimatum to Iran, compliance with which is a condition for the complete lifting of an unprecedented maritime blockade and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to US President Donald Trump's post on Truth Social.
Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and demining
The American leader stressed that Iran must agree that it will never possess nuclear weapons or a bomb. Under this condition, the Strait of Hormuz must be immediately reopened for unrestricted shipping in both directions without any additional fees.
"Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented naval blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of heading home!" Trump wrote.
He also added that the United States, using its submarine minesweepers, has already eliminated numerous naval mines through detonation. Iran must now immediately complete the removal and destruction of the remaining mines, which, according to Trump, are few.
Elimination of "nuclear dust"
The US President also focused on the destruction of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, which was struck by American aviation nearly a year ago.
This is about the enriched material buried deep underground under collapsed rock formations.
"The enriched material, sometimes referred to as 'nuclear dust,' which is buried deep underground with virtually collapsed mountains, caused by our powerful B2 bomber attack 11 months ago, sitting on top of it, will be unearthed by the United States...and destroyed," Trump said.
According to him, the United States and China are the only countries with the necessary technical capabilities to carry out such work. The operation will be conducted in close coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Trump concluded that financial settlements between the countries will not take place until further notice, while other "far less importance" have already been agreed upon.
He is currently in the Situation Room to make a final decision.
What led up to this
US President Donald Trump stated that an unfavorable deal for Washington with Tehran would be the point after which the US military would resume strikes against Iran.
Although Trump called Iranian representatives clever and excellent negotiators, he emphasized that all the cards remain in the US's hands due to a previous military victory over them.
At the same time, Washington and Tehran had previously agreed on a draft memorandum providing for a 60-day ceasefire to launch further negotiations on the nuclear program. However, this framework document has still not entered into force, as Donald Trump has not given his final political approval.
Amid news of a difficult negotiation process and declining hopes for a final agreement to extend the ceasefire, global markets reacted immediately. In particular, on Friday, May 29, oil prices fell again, showing an overall weekly decline of 8%.
