Trump has brought us closer than ever to ending war in Ukraine, says Starmer

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that US President Donald Trump’s efforts during talks with dictator Vladimir Putin were an important step toward ending the war in Ukraine, according to Sky News.
Starmer said: "President Trump's efforts have brought us closer than ever before to ending Russia's illegal war in Ukraine. His leadership in pursuit of an end to the killing should be commended."
Starmer stressed that further negotiations must include President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the "path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without him."
The UK leader also emphasized that security guarantees from Europe and the US will be key to deterring Russian aggression.
He added that allies will continue to pressure Moscow with new sanctions until Putin "stops his barbaric assault."
Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska
In the early hours of August 16, US President Donald Trump met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in a three-on-three format in Alaska. The talks lasted nearly three hours.
Afterward, Trump discussed the outcome with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and EU leaders, reaffirming his commitment to a direct peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.
The US leader promised that if negotiations with Zelenskyy succeed, a follow-up meeting with Putin will take place on August 18 to further resolve the conflict.
Security guarantees for Ukraine were also discussed.
According to a European diplomat, the US proposed a model "Non-NATO Article 5 security guarantees," providing a collective response from Europe and the US in case of new aggression against Ukraine, but without formal NATO involvement.
