Donald Trump has expressed doubt over whether he can end Russia's war in Ukraine — a notable shift from the bold promises he made during his election campaign, Politico informs.

Trump said he was no longer certain he could bring the war to an end. This marks a departure from his earlier pledge to quickly resolve the conflict.

"I don’t know. I can’t tell you whether or not that’s going to happen," the US President said.

When asked whether ending the war remains a priority, Trump said it is something he still wants.

"Yes. I’d like to see it happen," he said.

Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to stop the fighting between the two countries on day one of his presidency. He later walked back that promise, calling it an "exaggeration."

"We helped a lot of countries. The Ukraine situation — that's a Biden deal. It’s not a Trump deal. I’m trying to get it finished off," Trump said.

Trump had previously tried to position himself as a mediator for peace between Russia and Ukraine. This week, Trump even held another phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the outlet, the Thursday call with Putin “did not yield any progress.”

"I told you I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people — it's no good," Trump added.

Later, Trump also spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
