The authors emphasize that the US President did not speak in detail about how to respond to the biggest global challenges facing Washington, including confronting China's growing influence and nuclear arsenal, or about a strategy to separate the Russians and Chinese.
The NYT emphasizes that Trump also did not stop with his order to freeze all foreign aid, a move that has affected many people around the world.
As the journalists add, Trump welcomed the overture by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to return to discussions on peace talks and a minerals deal. But Trump left in place his ban on further arms sales or other significant assistance to Ukraine.
US aid on hold
For several days, a number of Western media outlets have been quoting a White House official as saying that the administration of US President Donald Trump has suspended all military aid to Ukraine. This even includes the aid approved by the Joe Biden administration.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the suspension of US aid to Ukraine through a logistics hub in Poland.
Experts and military analysts have different assessments of Ukraine's ability to conduct combat operations without US assistance. Some experts suggest that the Ukrainian army, with help from other allies, will be able to sustain itself without the United States for up to six months.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine wants to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible. He outlined the first possible steps to resolve the war - the release of prisoners, a ceasefire in the sky and at sea.
