US President Donald Trump held a conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. They discussed the possibility of a meeting between the American leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Vatican, Sky News reports.

According to the outlet’s sources in the Italian government, Trump and Meloni spoke on August 7.

Sky News interlocutors clarified that if the US and Russian leaders do meet in Rome, the talks would take place at the Vatican.

"Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani believes that, no matter how and wherever a genuine diplomatic dialogue between Russia and Ukraine proceeds, Italy will be ready to support this process sincerely and constructively," an Italian Foreign Ministry spokesperson told journalists.

Arrest warrant for Putin

Italy could be a problematic meeting location for Putin, since the country is obligated to enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant issued against the Russian leader in 2023.

The ICC issued the warrant due to Putin’s suspected involvement in the unlawful deportation of children and illegal transfer of people from Ukrainian territory to Russia.

Incidentally, just yesterday, August 7, Putin mentioned the possibility of meeting Trump in the UAE. However, no information was given regarding a potential meeting at the Vatican.

Meanwhile, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov claimed that the venue for the Trump-Putin meeting had allegedly already been determined.
