Boeing purchase talks
Details of a potential US–China deal on Boeing aircraft purchases remain unknown, including delivery timelines and specific models. However, the scale of the agreement turned out to be significantly smaller than earlier market expectations.
According to Reuters sources, ahead of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, a package of around 500 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft was being discussed, along with possible additional orders for wide-body jets. In the end, the deal reportedly involves about 200 aircraft. According to Reuters sources, China is also negotiating a similarly sized agreement with European manufacturer Airbus.
Following Trump’s statement, Boeing shares fell by around 4.1% during trading.
Sources say the aircraft deal talks were part of a broader economic package between Washington and Beijing ahead of the Trump–Xi meeting.
Analysts note that the reduced expected size of the contract sent a negative signal to the market, as large airline orders are typically seen as an indicator of stable trade relations between the US and China.
Previously, it was reported that during his visit to Beijing, US President Donald Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, including an informal part of the meeting at the Zhongnanhai government complex. The leaders visited the grounds of a former imperial garden, where Xi showed historical trees that are hundreds of years old, and parts of the conversation were picked up by microphones.
During the talks, they also discussed Zhongnanhai’s status as a closed government compound housing China’s key governing bodies. Xi noted that diplomatic receptions there are extremely rare and mentioned that among the few foreign guests of the complex was Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Separately, RBC-Ukraine reported that after meeting Xi Jinping, Donald Trump said they discussed the war in Ukraine. According to him, both sides emphasized an interest in resolving the conflict and continuing to seek ways to end it.
