US President Donald Trump said after his visit to China that talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping failed to produce major breakthroughs either on trade issues or on the matter of resolving the conflict with Iran, Reuters reports.

The visit has officially concluded

Reuters reports that Trump’s trip to China marked the first visit by a US President to the country since 2017. The American side had hoped to secure meaningful agreements that could strengthen the White House’s position amid domestic political pressures. However, according to participants in the talks, no substantial progress was achieved.

Different priorities

A source said that trade relations and possible economic agreements were discussed during meetings in Beijing, but the two sides showed noticeably different approaches. According to the report, Trump focused on quick results and concrete deals, while Xi Jinping emphasized the long-term stabilization of relations between the two countries.

Chinese officials proposed a new definition for bilateral ties — "constructive strategic stability", moving away from previous rhetoric centered on strategic competition.

Iran and the international agenda

The situation surrounding Iran was also a major topic during the talks. Despite discussions, the United States did not receive any additional commitments from China regarding influence over Tehran.

The American side said both countries shared similar views on the need for stability, but no concrete measures were agreed upon.

Taiwan and tensions in the dialogue

Taiwan became another key issue in the negotiations. According to Trump, Xi Jinping reiterated China’s opposition to Taiwanese independence and warned of possible consequences in the event of escalation.

The US side, meanwhile, stressed that no new commitments had been made regarding the issue.

Trade expectations and reality

The source also noted that despite market expectations, no large-scale economic agreements were reached.

The sides discussed agricultural supplies and potential purchases of American goods, but no key deals were finalized.

Media reports added that rare earth supplies and a tariff truce were also discussed, although the two countries did not announce any extension of existing arrangements.

Results of the visit

Following the trip, Trump said the negotiations took place in a constructive atmosphere, but without significant breakthroughs.

According to Reuters, major decisions on trade, security, and international conflicts have been postponed for future contacts between Washington and Beijing.

Meanwhile, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Beijing on May 20 as part of upcoming talks with the Chinese side.

It is also worth noting that during his visit to China, Donald Trump joined Xi Jinping at the Zhongnanhai government complex in Beijing. As part of the official program, he was shown historic trees located on the residence grounds — the same area previously visited by Putin.
