US President Donald Trump announced plans to hold a separate meeting in Davos on Greenland. This followed a phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, according to his post.
According to Trump, during his conversation with the NATO Secretary General, he agreed to organize a meeting involving various parties within the framework of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. The main topic will be the situation around Greenland.
"I had a very good telephone call with Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, concerning Greenland. I agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland," Trump said.
The US president stressed that the island is "imperative for national and world security" of the United States. He also stated that there will be no retreat on this issue and, according to him, "everyone agrees" with this assessment.
Separately, Trump emphasized the United States' role in global security, stating that it is the world's most powerful country. According to him, this became possible thanks to the rebuilding of the US military during his first presidential term, which, he claims, is now continuing at an even faster pace.
"We are the only power that can ensure peace throughout the world — and it is done, quite simply, through strength," Trump wrote.
Trump push on Greenland
Donald Trump is not backing down from his plan to assert control over the Arctic island of Greenland. He recently said that, starting February 1, the United States will impose 10% tariffs on a number of European countries, precisely because of the Greenland issue.
According to the US President, new tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.
At the same time, Trump did not specify which goods tariffs would apply to and did not disclose details of the decision.
Thus, White House chief has put Europe on notice: hand over Greenland or prepare for a trade war.
