On February 1, Russian troops attacked with a drone a service bus carrying miners in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, killing 15 people and injuring at least seven others, according to Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration head Oleksandr Hanzha and Ternivka city deputy mayor Oleksandr Dobrovolskyi.
"The enemy struck with a UAV near an employee service bus of one of the enterprises in the Pavlohradskyi district. The details are being clarified," Hanzha reported.
At the same time, Ukraine's State Emergency Service and the deputy mayor of Ternivka confirmed the attack and the number of casualties. Ukraine's National Police also confirmed that a Russian strike on civilian infrastructure resulted in a bus being burnt.
What we know about victims
Initially, the military regional administration reported 12 dead and 7 injured, but the number of casualties later rose. As of 5:38 PM, 15 people were confirmed dead in the attack. Authorities later confirmed that the victims were miners from the energy company DTEK.
"One of the attacks targeted a company service bus that transported miners in the Dnipropetrovsk region after their working shift. At this time, 15 miners are confirmed killed, and preliminary reports indicate seven more have been injured," the energy company reports.
Russia's strikes on DTEK
Throughout 2025, Russian forces repeatedly targeted miners working for DTEK, Ukraine's major energy company.
On the night of December 12, Russia's drones struck one of the coal mines for six hours, injuring two workers.
Earlier, on October 25, Russian troops also attacked a DTEK mine in the Dnipropetrovsk region. At the time of the strike, 496 miners were underground, but fortunately, no casualties were reported. This was the seventh major attack on DTEK's coal facilities over a two-month period.
