Türkiye on Ukraine-Russia talks: Both sides trying to align their positions

Ukraine and Russia are trying to align their positions ahead of negotiations in Türkiye, while each side is attempting to preserve its key principles, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with TRT Haber.
"Right now, both sides are trying to align their positions. At the same time, of course, they are trying to do so without losing ground in terms of public diplomacy and strategic political messaging," said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
He added that each side has its own base that it needs to protect. According to Fidan, the strategic objective is to establish a ceasefire regime.
"But the key strategic goal for us is to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible and to launch structured peace negotiations. This is a very important issue for our region," Fidan said.
Possible talks between Zelenskyy and Putin
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed resuming direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. The offer came after Ukraine and its Western partners issued an ultimatum to Moscow demanding a ceasefire. In case of refusal, European nations threatened to impose new sanctions on Russia.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated he was ready to meet — but only after a full and unconditional ceasefire.
Later, he indicated he would be willing to personally meet with Putin on May 15 in Türkiye.
However, Zelenskyy ruled out any talks with Kremlin representatives, emphasizing he would only speak directly with Putin. According to him, the agenda would focus on a ceasefire and the release of prisoners.
The Kremlin has not officially confirmed Putin's participation in the talks. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has suggested he may also travel to Türkiye.
