Switzerland joins EU's 15th package of sanctions against Russia
The Swiss authorities have decided to join the EU's 15th package of sanctions against Russia and measures against Belarus, according to the Swiss government's press service.
The Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research of Switzerland, the competent authority on sanctions, has expanded the list of sanctions against Russia and Belarus.
"Thus, Switzerland joins the additional sanctions introduced by the EU in response to Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine and the situation in Belarus. The changes will take effect on December 24," the Swiss government stated.
Switzerland emphasized that newly sanctioned individuals are also subject to entry and transit bans in the country.
"The Ministry has adopted individual financial sanctions that the EU imposed against Belarus as part of its measures against the Belarusian regime due to the situation in the country," the government added.
EU sanctions against Russia
On December 15, the European Union adopted its 15th sanctions package against Russia. The sanctions list includes 54 individuals and 30 organizations from Russia, China, and North Korea. Specifically, the EU imposed sanctions on Russia's shadow fleet, Russian military personnel involved in the attack on Okhmatdyt hospital, executives in the energy sector, individuals responsible for child deportations, propaganda efforts, and sanction evasion.
Recently, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU has already begun work on the 16th sanctions package against Russia.
According to media reports, the new package is expected to be adopted by the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
