Slovakia "has the moral right" to discuss halting gas supplies to Ukraine, referring to the transit of gas through Slovak territory, states Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

According to the Slovak Prime Minister, after Russian strikes on Ukrainian gas facilities, Ukraine began receiving gas last week through a backup pipeline that passes through Slovak territory.

"This is gas without which Ukraine would freeze. Slovakia is not involved in this. The suppliers are foreign companies. However, we have the moral right to consider ways to halt the supply of about 7.5 million cubic meters of gas per day to Ukraine, which comes from foreign deliveries from Europe," Fico added.

He also complained that EU countries could become dependent on American oil and gas because Europe cannot compete with the US.

In his opinion, the war in Ukraine allegedly benefits Western countries, as they seek to weaken Russia.

Fico's threats

Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico was highly displeased with Ukraine's decision to halt the transit of Russian gas, which ceased on January 1.

In response, the Slovak Prime Minister began issuing threats to Ukraine. Specifically, he stated that Slovakia might stop exporting electricity to Ukraine.

He also promised to significantly reduce aid to Ukrainian refugees who fled to Slovakia due to the full-scale war.
