Slovakia is concerned that Ukraine’s possible NATO membership might lead to new conflicts, stated Slovakia's Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár.

After meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár told reporters that the Russia-Ukraine war cannot be resolved through military means, and Bratislava advocates for a swift search for a peaceful solution.

He also added that Slovakia supports Ukraine's membership in the EU, but disagrees with Kyiv on its views on joining NATO. He believes that NATO membership could lead to new conflicts. However, he stated that Slovakia respects Ukraine's right to choose its path.

In contrast, Sybiha expressed confidence that NATO membership aligns with the interests of both Kyiv and Bratislava, as it would ensure stability. He also asserted that NATO membership would lead to peace.

Background

Ukraine seeks NATO membership to protect itself from a potential repeat invasion by Russia. Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office Andriy Yermak have emphasized that only joining the Alliance can establish lasting peace in Europe.

However, NATO countries delay inviting Ukraine and are limited to promises of future membership. For more details, read the material by RBC-Ukraine.
