The Ukrainian Armed Forces have been conducting an operation in the Kursk region for about 8 months. During this time, Ukrainian troops have taken control of around a hundred settlements in the region. The goal of the operation has been to draw Russian forces away from other areas of the front and to prevent a renewed Russian offensive in the eastern and northern regions of Ukraine.

At the beginning of February, the General Staff reported that Russia had lost 40,000 soldiers during the six months of the Kursk operation. In addition, Russia has brought North Korean soldiers into the fighting in the Kursk region.

In March, information began spreading online alleging that Ukrainian troops were encircled, but both the General Staff of the Armed Forces and President Volodymyr Zelensky denied this.

Recently, Zelensky stated that Russia wants to push Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region. Currently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding back 64,000 occupying troops there.

"They want to push us completely out of the Kursk region, but everyone understands and confirms that we are there. There is no encirclement, we are in the Kursk region. And our presence is not only in the Kursk region," the President said.
