Seoul to build its first civilian nuclear bunker: 14 days of protection for 1,000 people

Seoul will build its first nuclear bunker under a high-rise residential complex by 2028. It will provide two weeks of protection for 1,020 people, according to The Korea Herald.
The Seoul city government and Seoul Housing and Communities Corp. will build an underground shelter designed to protect against nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks.
The bunker will cover a total area of 2,147 square meters on the third basement level of a complex consisting of 16 residential buildings. It will be able to accommodate up to 1,020 people at the same time.
The shelter will be equipped with ventilation systems, water storage, water supply, and sewage facilities, allowing residents to survive up to 14 days in the event of external nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks. When not in use during emergencies, it will serve as a public fitness center.
Key factors driving this project include the escalation of military threats from North Korea and global security instability, including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
"Because modern threats are different from those in the past, we’re launching this project to expand the role of civil defense shelters. We hope it will mark a new step toward better protecting citizens and improving Seoul’s security system," said a city government representative.
Global billionaires are increasingly concerned about a possible end-of-the-world scenario. For example, Mark Zuckerberg began constructing the large-scale Koolau complex in Hawaii back in 2014.
The project, spanning over 1,400 acres, includes self-sufficient shelters with independent power supply and food reserves.
In Germany, demand for private protective bunkers has increased by 50%. This happened after Russian Shahed drones violated Polish airspace.
