EU divided on sending troops to Ukraine, coalition formation possible – Reuters
Currently, there is no consensus among the European Union countries on the issue of sending troops to Ukraine. Perhaps the idea will be realized through the creation of a coalition, Reuters reports.
Macron's visit to Poland
French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Poland today. During his meeting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Reuters sources say that Ukraine will be the main issue on the agenda. Among other things, they will discuss the deployment of European troops in the country in the event of a ceasefire and a peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.
Five other European diplomats said that France and Britain also discussed the prospect of sending European troops last month. Kyiv, in turn, has been holding similar talks with the Baltic states and Scandinavia.
Lack of consensus in the EU
"There is no consensus among European countries so the idea would be to create a coalition of 5-8 European countries, which are not dependent on NATO but on a bilateral agreement with Ukraine and are very determined to act," a source said.
Sending troops to Ukraine
French President Macron was the first to raise this issue, but it only sparked discussions among Ukraine's allies. There were those who were ready to consider this possibility, namely: Latvia, Canada, Estonia, and Lithuania. Later it became known that it was not a question of direct deployment to participate in combat operations.
According to Olha Stefanishyna, Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine and Minister of Justice, Ukraine is ready to discuss the deployment of foreign military personnel on its territory.
