Lithuanian Foreign Minister says initiative to send Western troops to Ukraine worth considering
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis says the initiative to deploy Western ground troops in Ukraine is worth considering.
"Europe’s fate is being decided on the battlefields of Ukraine. Times like these require political leadership, ambition, and courage to think out of the box. The initiative behind the Paris meeting yesterday is well worth considering," the Lithuanian Foreign Minister writes.
Deployment of Western troops in Ukraine
On February 26, a working meeting of about 20 European leaders took place at the Elysee Palace in Paris. The participants discussed ways to confront Russia and possible ways to help Ukraine resist the aggressor in the context of the escalating situation at the front in recent weeks.
During the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out the possibility that NATO would send troops to help Ukraine. The main problem, he said, is that there is currently no consensus on this issue. At the same time, Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Italy opposed this initiative. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was also categorical, stating that there are no plans to deploy NATO combat troops on the territory of Ukraine.
