Screening process for Ukraine and Moldova EU accession nearing completion – EU commissioner

The screening process for the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union will soon be completed for both countries, said EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, Rai News reports.
According to her, after the completion of the screening, all clusters can be opened this year. And if the EU Council does not give its political approval, "we can move forward with the technical aspects."
"At the core of the enlargement package, which will be published in the coming months, there will be no compromises: every accession negotiation begins and ends with a discussion of fundamental principles," the commissioner noted.
Ukraine's accession to the EU
The European Union cannot start negotiations with Ukraine on joining the bloc solely because of the position of pro-Russian Hungary. Budapest has vetoed the start of talks.
Meanwhile, Lithuania has proposed a plan to begin accession negotiations without Hungary's consent. According to Vilnius' idea, the technical launch of the talks can be carried out at the level of the 26 member states of the bloc.
President of the European Council António Costa also believes that negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU must continue despite Hungary's veto.
In the meantime, Ukraine expects that EU countries will make a decision on starting accession negotiations in the near future.
Yesterday, it also became known that Ukraine and the EU had completed the screening for the last cluster of accession talks.
In addition, Denmark is working on developing mechanisms to advance accession negotiations with Ukraine and carry out reforms, while Hungary continues to block the opening of negotiation clusters.
