Today, April 3, a Su-30 fighter jet crashed in Crimea; the crew ejected, according to Russia’s Interfax.
"Today at around 11 a.m. Moscow time, a Su-30 aircraft crashed in Crimea during a routine training flight. The aircraft was flying without munitions," the agency quotes a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The aircraft’s crew ejected and was subsequently evacuated by a ground search and rescue team.
Su-30
The Su-30 is a two-seat multi-role fighter based on the Su-27 platform. It is equipped with two turbojet engines and is designed to perform air superiority, escort, and strike missions against ground and sea targets, as well as radar surveillance.
Several Su-30 variants (including export versions and specialized variants such as the Su-30MKI, Su-30MKK, and Su-30SM) differ in their equipment, from radars and avionics to the presence of canards and engine changes, which affect maneuverability, range, and weapon loadout.
Some versions are equipped with air-to-air and air-to-surface guided weapons, and their payload capacity reaches several tons.
Air disasters in Russia
Recently, Russian air defense forces mistook a light aircraft near Moscow for a Ukrainian drone and opened fire on the mistaken target. After being hit, the pilot lost control and crashed near the Oka River; everyone on board was killed.
Recently, an An-22 Antey military transport aircraft crashed in Russia’s Ivanovo region, with seven crew members on board.
Earlier, a Su-30 fighter jet crashed during a training flight in Russia. The plane crashed in a remote area, and the crew was killed.
